Antonin Artaud

| Contents/Chapters: The work of Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) occupies an original position, at the crossroads of literature, drawing, theater, cinema and radio. Radically innovative, it is part of a rage for expression that overturns language and codes, leaving no art form untouched and no reader-listener-viewer indifferent. The Bibliothèque nationale de France pays tribute to Artaud in a retrospective exhibition which, by presenting - for the first time on this scale - the whole of Artaud's literary, graphic, film and recorded output, brings home the phenomenal creative energy he developed from the early 1920s until 1948. The two hundred or so reproductions of Artaud's works illustrate the prodigious reverse side of his imprisonment and madness. Self-portraits, drawings, notebooks from Rodez and Ivry (many unpublished), spells sent from Ireland and Ville-Évrard, autograph manuscripts, punctuate the portrait of the man in whom André Breton hailed a "man of prodigies". The originality of the theater theorist is underlined by the emphasis placed on the sources of the famous Théâtre et son Double, often non-theatrical and non-European. An abundance of iconography, including set photographs and rarely-seen documents, illustrates Artaud's dazzling film career. Finally, Artaud's writings on art - a little-known yet remarkable aspect of his work - are presented alongside the paintings that marked his aesthetic thinking (Loth et ses filles, attributed to Lucas de Leyde, La Toilette de Cathy, by Balthus, Homme dans un intérieur, by André Masson...), helping to renew the traditional critical approach. | Material: 224 p. ; ill. in color ; 27 cm
