Les marionnettes du monde
Creators: Michel Colardelle et Marie-Claude Groshens
Puppets - World - Museum - Gadagne - Marseille | Contents/Chapters: Drawing on the collections of the Musée des civilisations et de la Méditerranée (MuCEM) and the Musée international des marionnettes, this monograph offers a synthesis of knowledge concerning the activity of puppet theaters around the world. In an approach that is both aesthetic and sociological, the book places the objects in their context, the puppets as the central element, but also all the material necessary for the show and the documents relating to them: castelets, sets, props, posters, prints, texts, photographs. The puppets represent either gods, heroes, magicians and other great transcendent actors from religion, history or legend, or singular types with relatively fixed properties, determined by their name, dress, attributes, physical, psychological and social characteristics, as well as their language, and who appear to have a life of their own. seem to enjoy a life of their own within the fictional world of puppets. Some of these singular types have achieved such strong and lasting fame that they have entered common parlance as common names (a guignol, a polichinelle, a Jacques), and have become identifying emblems of cities, regions or nations. Alongside the "great characters" and these singular types, referred to as puppet-types, there are also general types that are generally caricatured, such as the peasant, the gendarme, the marquis and so on. The plan places the show in a central position, as this is what gives the theaters their full meaning. The classification is based on categories of puppet characters, chosen as the pivot around which the other categories revolve. | Materials: 256 p. ; ill. in color ; 28 cm
