Half a century later, the great Hellenist Salomon Reinach made the connection between the mimes of the Ottoman world, their Italian counterparts and those of Antiquity, via Byzantium: "It seems well established that the Turkish Karagöz inherited the Byzantine mime, as did, by other means, the Commedia dell'arte and the puppet theater". Perhaps the filiation is not so direct. However, the continuity is striking: unlike ancient tragedy, which had to wait until the Renaissance to be reinvented as opera and then theater, comedy and its masks, relayed by puppets, enjoyed a less illustrious but uninterrupted fortune.... | Material: 420 p.; ill. in black and color; 24 cm
