Le théâtre des fous / the Drama for fools

| Contents/Chapters: Edward Gordon Craig, playwright? It's hard to believe, given that the English director's reputation is built on his utopian vision of a visual theater of pure movement in space, from which the spoken word would be banished. However, during the First World War, when his actors' school in Florence had just been closed, he imagined a cycle of 365 plays for puppets, to be performed by an itinerant theater. By the time he gave up his project in the early 1920s, some 50 texts had either been completed or only sketched out, and he would return to them again and again to correct or complete them for almost forty years. Sometimes combining wire and girdle manipulation, shadows and silhouettes in the same piece, playing with all the resources of theater within theater and simultaneous scenes, these comic and satirical texts, almost entirely unpublished (only half a dozen of them were published, in confidential editions, during the author's lifetime), reveal a little-known aspect of Craig's work. But they also confirm the visionary nature of his work, so astonishingly modern is his dramaturgical inventiveness. | Material: 432 p. ; ill. in color ; 28 cm
