Le Bethléem Verviétois - Une survivance d’ancien théâtre religieux de marionnettes
Creators: Jules Feller
| Contents/Chapters: The famous Bethlehem of Verviers is a kind of puppet theater whose characters are small subjects made of wood or papier-mâché. They are manipulated by children, hidden under trestles, who animate the show as the spectators move about: unlike a puppet show, here it's the spectators who move about the stage, which is divided into different stations (21 in all), rather like a Stations of the Cross. It features several episodes from the Gospel, blending the religious and the secular, evoking both the nativity of Christ and the popular customs of the 19th century. The commentary, in Walloon, is often interspersed with old Christmas carols.
