La vie filmique des marionnettes

Pinocchio (fictional character) - Jan Svankmajer - Cinema - Animation (cinema) - Animated films with puppets - Plasticine animation - Puppets - - At the movies - Video games - Dance - Ventriloquist | Contents/Chapters: From the first Pathé films to digital screens, the puppet has had an eclipsed life in film, appearing suddenly and in bursts in the work of the greatest, from Chaplin to Roberto Benigni, from Renoir and Bergman to Spielberg, Kitano and Tim Burton. Long confined to animation, it is now making a spectacular comeback on screens the world over. More subversive than melancholy, she is the supple creature who never ceases to free herself from the bonds that subject her, in silence and humiliation, to the ventriloquist Showman, the Father, the Deus/Diabolus ex machina. She is to the filmmaker, the actor and the spectator what the Sphinx is to Oedipus: rich with a wild, obscene, archaic life that they must confront for a time. Through these constantly mutating border bodies, the magnifying mirrors of cinema reflect the liberating images of a modernity in the making, between returns to childhood, burlesque metamorphoses and passages towards disturbing or sublime strangeness. To bring the filmic life of puppets out of the shadows, Laurence Schifano, Professor of Film Studies at Université Paris 10, has brought together historians and researchers whose fields of research lie at the crossroads of psychoanalysis, literature, theater and cinema. | Materials: 317p; ill. in black; color cover;
